Sixth-inning rally comes up one run short for CSJ

The Fighting Saints suffered a 13-14 defeat to host Southern Maine Community College in the YSCC fall tournament semifinal game on Saturday, Oct. 7. College of St. Joseph outhit SMCC 18-13.

The Seawolves started the game strong, putting up three runs in the first inning off of hits by Emma Burns and Kahli Philibotte. In the bottom of the first, as a CSJ base runner was caught stealing and thrown out at second base, Arielys Rodriguez scored to make the game 1-3.

SMCC scored four at the top of the second inning. The first run came off an SMCC walk with the bases loaded. Philibotte sent the next two runs in off of a single to center field. Another walk given up by CSJ resulted in Sara Ring scoring to make the game 1-7.

The Fighting Saints were not deterred, unleashing seven runs in the bottom of the second. Katie Jenkins sparked CSJ's momentum with a single to left field, sending Sierra Jaeger home for a score. Rodriguez hit next, a single to right field, sending Ashley Vasas to second, Jenkins to third and Crowley across home plate. Vanessa Quigley batted next, sending the ball to left field and Jenkins home. A Lena Tirotta hit sent Vasas home, and Shelby Fenton hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Rodriguez to score and make the deficit 6-7. Jaeger then hit a single to second base, advancing Tirotta and scoring Quigley. Crowley gave CSJ their only lead of the game by hitting to left field, causing Tirotta to score for an 8-7 Fighting Saints' edge.

The third inning mimicked the first, as the Seawolves scored three runs to the Fighting Saints' one. Madison Eastman had an RBI and scored in the inning, and Ring also contributed an RBI to make the score 8-10. A Quigley double to left field sent Rodriguez home, cutting the Saints' deficit two.

The Fighting Saints were unable to respond to four SMCC runs in the fourth inning. Eastman, Burns, Amber Randall and Meranda Martin provided runs for the Seawolves, extending their lead to 9-14. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning, and SMCC did not score in the top of the sixth, either.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, CSJ was able to connect with pitches once again. Tirotta got the inning going with a home run over the center field fence. She recorded two RBIs with the homer, making the game 11-14. Vasas walked with the bases loaded, sending Jenkins to second, Crowley to third and scoring Fenton for a score of 12-14. Rodriguez hit a RBI single to center field, allowing Crowley to score. The Saints' comeback fell just short, as the inning and game concluded without another run scored by either team.

Crowley took the loss on the mound for CSJ, and provided three hits, as did Quigley. Rodriguez led with four hits, and Tirotta led with three RBIs, which included her second home run of the fall season.

Pitcher Kristen Mackenzie earned the win for the Seawolves. SMCC advanced to the fall YSCC Championship with the win, and went on to defeat NHTI 4-3.
