The matchup between the Lady Saints and the Seawolves on Saturday, Jan. 9 was a fight to the finish from tip-off to the sound of the last horn. In a game that went back and forth throughout, the Lady Saints were able to make enough plays down the stretch to ensure a 60-56 victory. The women are now an impressive 10-1 on the season and winners of their last eight games. They are also a perfect 5-0 in conference play. CSJ is ranked second in the USCAA Division II Women's Basketball Polls just behind Penn State Hazleton.
CSJ was led by powerhouse center Regina Steele. Despite getting into foul trouble early in the fourth quarter, she was able to enforce her will when the Lady Saints needed her most. Steele was a beast down low, recording game highs with 18 points, 15 boards, and four blocks. She was also very efficient, shooting an almost perfect 8 of 9 from the field.
It was a gutsy win for the Lady Saints due to their struggles to get the ball into the hoop. Both teams had tough games from the field, CSJ shooting just 35 percent and Southern Maine CC shooting only 29 percent. CSJ relied on its defense throughout the game and was able to control the pace by playing gritty on that side of the floor. They ended up accumulating a season high 12 blocks and also stole the ball eight times.
The Seawolves fought hard and kept the game close, but the Lady Saints were great in the clutch moments and were able to hold onto the victory. The women's team gets back into action this Thursday, Jan. 14 against Pine Manor.
