College of St. Joseph's men's basketball team traveled to Williams College on Monday, Jan. 22 and were handed a 104-49 loss. The Ephs, who are a NCAA Division III team, were New England Small College Athletic Conference runners-up in 2016, and boast a 14-4 record this season.
James Heskett made a jump shot 15 seconds into the contest to put Williams on the board. After a CSJ turnover, Casey Bobby made good on his first three point shot attempt of the night, putting the Ephs up 5-0 from the get-go. Another early CSJ turnover led to a Cole Teal layup to put Williams up 7-0 before the Fighting Saints called a 30 second timeout.
After the short break, Kadeem Riddick got the Saints on the scoreboard with a three pointer off a Jared Brown assist. On minute later, Riddick grabbed a defensive board and advanced the ball to Tyreke Woodard for a layup, cutting CSJ's deficit to two, 7-5.
Each team attempted threes on their next possessions but to not avail. Williams' Henry Feinberg grabbed a rebound off of a missed CSJ shot and took the ball coast-to-coast for a layup, making the game 9-5 five minutes into the match. Casey and Heskett then scored consecutive three pointers for the Ephs, giving their team a 15-5 advantage.
Quadarius Spence responded with a jump shot off an assist by Woodard, but on the other end of the floor Teal received a pass from Casey and knocked down a three point shot. A quick shot by the Saints that was off the mark resulted in a Williams possession that left Feinberg open for a three pointer, which he scored to put his team up 21-7 midway through the first half.
CSJ's offense picked up in the latter portion of the first half, only being outscored 26-21. Woodard hit a three and a layup and Fighting Saints newcomer Christopher Kidd sank a three pointer to go along with a foul shot. CSJ also received offensive contributions from Brown, Darrien White, Deron Walter and Charles Isaac throughout the half.
Spence hit two jumpers in a thirty second span, but the Ephs went on a 9-3 in the final two minutes of the half to lead 47-28 at halftime. Williams shot 6-for-12 from three in the first half of play and 66.7 percent from the field. The Fighting Saints were 3-for-13 from three and recorded 39.3 percent shooting from the field.
The second half was even less forgiving for CSJ, as they were outscored 57-21 and got fewer shots off. Williams netted six more three pointers in the final frame to CSJ's one. Overall Williams pulled down 47 rebounds as a team to CSJ's 27, and committed 12 total turnovers to CSJ's 22.
Hesket led the Ephs with 21 points and two assists. Feinberg recorded 15 points, three assists and two steals and Casey notched a game-high seven assists and 11 points.
Riddick led the Fighting Saints in rebounding with six, while also recording seven points and one assists. Woodard had two steals and a team-high 11 points. In his debut for CSJ, Kidd also scored a team-high 11 points and recorded four rebounds.
